If you can see images on the screen when you put the computer on, then your video card is not missing. If you have problems playing a game, it's more likely that the graphics card is not suited to the task or the drivers are not installed.
If it's a question of drivers then you should visit the HP website and use your service tag to get the correct drivers for your operating system. If however you have a different video card to the one supplied by HP then you'll have to visit the manufacture of the chipset's website.
almost always http://www.ati.com or http://www.nividia.com
Best you contact a qualified technician if you're not sure.
Oh yes if the video card is missing there would be no place to plug the screen into. You question lacks the necessary info to decipher what exactly your problem is.
one other thing that could be wrong is that you switch the pc on, and your not seeing images on the screen, but hte video card is actually there in which case, it could be a fault with your motherboard, cpu, the connection to the screen or the screen itself.
Some computers have two graphics (videp) cards, and you might have plugged your screen into the wrong one.
If you purchased a new LCD screen it might come with a different connection to the old VGA connector and your graphics card doesn't have that connection, in that case you will have to buy an adapter so that your new screen can plug into your computer.

If your video card is missing from your HP computer than buy another one from any store you just need to know what kind of Slots your computer can use. All computers can use a PCI Video card, For AGP or PCI Express you need to look inside your computer or veiw the specs at HP.com. No matter what Video Card you buy it doesn't take much to be better than the one HP provided you with. Buying a replacement from HP will probably cost you more than your computer did in the first place, Plus it would suck.
