I recently bought a packet of cheddar cheese from ASDA. When I got it home, I was horrified to discover that the cheese was a "product of new zealand".

While the government with one hand tax people heavily for flying off for their holidays, the import of cheese to the other side of the world is considered economically viable enough for them to get cheese from New Zealand, fly it accross the world to Scotland, and even then, it's still the cheaper than cheese from this country.

If air transport is so environmentally damaging, then surely we can make do with cheese from this country.

Like buying health; buying green is an absolute nightmare.

What I'm trying to do (With varying degrees of success) is to buy local: we have a local farmers market, there's also a good butchers and grocers nearby.

This DOES increase the time we spend on shopping - but we try and make it an event in itself.

So do still use the super market a lot; though try not to buy own brand anything. We seem to spend a lot of time reading labels (How much fat, how much salt, how much sugar, where's it from, how many additivies).

Sigh.

Flying on a small plane between Grand Cayman and Cuba I was amused to see, after all passengers had been seated, scores and scores of frozen chicken being loaded on board, in a part to the front of the plane which was of no practical use to passengers. I imagine that New Zealand cheese occupies equivalent space in a larger plane. I am grateful to be able to eat New Zealand cheese all over the world, together with New Zealand lamb. If we did not buy their produce, then presumably we would lose New Zealand as a market for UK produce? Besides, there are many other anomalies in air transport. Why, for instance, are very large heavy people given the same baggage allowance as very small people? Why aren't we rationed according to body weight?

If New Zealand makes better cheese then I don't see why companies wouldn't import it. It's called the free market and trust me if air transport is damaging the enviorment a cheese embargo ain't gonna help anything.

Your question is more complex than your explanation. One of the reasons for importing products from countries abroad is because of trade agreements that have been made between the two countries concerned. We buy their produce they buy ours.

You tell 'em girl they won't listen to me. And while you are on it look at where the fruit, vegetables, milk products, clothing, cookware, furniture, televisions, radios, cars, etc. sold in this country come from.
