let me be the one to put this to rest. there is no such law in Belgium, never has been and probably never Will. believe me i know as i have been working in repair shops and car dealerships for more than 15 years. by the way currently I'm working on ww2 and later tanks.

Here in Canada, we used to have a law like that but people screamed that the mechanics were ripping everybody off so they pulled that law. Now if we see a car that is dangerous, we can only take down the cars information in case we get sued by anyone.

Well, you should be able to have it towed to another shop if you want someone else to do the repairs.
Once I was listening to scanner traffic when a shop manager called the police to report a customer getting ready to leave in his car which had NO brakes. Cops told him they couldn't do anything about it. (IMO, you can't keep him from leaving, but you can at least wait outside the shop and stop him as soon as he gets on the road for equipment violations, have the car towed since it's obviously not road-worthy).

Don't feel bad - in the US they will charge you an arm and a leg, release the car, and the brakes may still not work.

i think that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard, so if you take your car somewhere to have the car checked out, they can say oh your brakes are bad its gonna cost you $1000 to fix it and if you dont let us do it you cant have the car back? thats retarded.
