How can you avoid becoming a fashion victim yourself?

To be fashionable is to be aware of the current styles, and good at assembling and wearing outfits accordingly. A fashion victim is someone who thinks they're aware of the current styles, but has a skewed view of them, or who is terrible at assembling and wearing the matching outfits.

I remember being a fashion victim once; when I was entering my freshman year of high school, I found myself surrounded by people who wouldn't give me the time of day. Convinced that it was my clothes at fault, I tried to figure out what was trendy by watching television instead of watching my peers. As a result, I bought and wore an outfit to school that made me look like a poorly coordinated Don Johnson wannabe (this was the 80s.) All it took was one girl saying to another as I passed "he thinks he's Don Johnson!" to make me realize I'd made a mistake, so I ditched that outfit and started paying attention to my peers' wardrobes.

Ultimately, I avoided future fashion calamities in a straightforward fashion: I got contact lenses (glasses weren't trendy like they are now), got my hair feathered (it was the 80s, did I mention that?) and wore clothes similar to my peers. It worked; I started getting dates (and the associated accountrements) and over time I developed a sense of fashion that was more suited to my personality (but equally effective.)

Having said that: by the time I was out of high school, I stopped worrying about being a fasion victim; first, because dressing attractively and in-fashion had become so natural that I found it more enjoyable to intentionally wear out-of-fashion stuff (which, ironically, had become fashionable in the late 80s!), and second, because I had learned that good fashion would get you in the door, but only being a good person would let you seal the deal.

Fashionable is someone who may trend toward what's in style, but smart enough to know if it looks funny, then don't wear it regardless of what it's called.

Fashion Victim is the one who wears whatever trash the fashion designers can dream up, including whatever junk the newspapers will publish in the fashion page.

Fashionable is a complimentary term meaning the person's clothing and accessories are current, pleasing, and prestigious.

Fashion victim is a derisive term implying the person was duped by the fashion industry into dressing in a style that does not improve their looks, or their prestige.

I purely think that fashion victim means someone who is so concerned with what is in fashion and try to copy it...I think a truly fashionable person is the person who feels comfortable enough with themselves to wear what they like opposed to what is IN!

Fashionable is being selective about current trends, colors, and knowing your age, body type, coloring, style, and event to dress appropriately. Fashion victim is having to have the latest style and color even if it doesn't look good on you. Not everything looks good on everybody. Sense of moderation and being honest with yourself is important.

First rule - be yourself.
Next, don't wear too many accessories a simple braclet or necklace will do.
Make sure your outfit is suited to where you are going.
If your going out with mates, dont wear the same or similar style clothes.
And if your really unsure what to wear read through fashion mags. but the biggest rule is dont go over the top, thats with anything - makeup, clothes, layers, accesories etc.
