Compresses. when pressure is exerted on both opposite sides of a gas, its atoms get nearer .And if it was strong enough, it can even become solid!!! Solids are impossible to compress, as far as I know. Liquids are very hard compressed and gas are so easily compressed.

I am going to guess you are talking about compression, which is the opposite of tension. Many materials preform differently under these two conditions. Example Concrete is great in compression but horrible in tension. Steel preforms pretty well under both situations.
