Why do some people choose their baby names based on what nickname they can make of the name. I thought nicknames were supposed to just happen naturally. I have a nickname for my son but it has nothing to do with his name. Just wondering what the deal with this is. Thanks.

I personally feel how you do, when choosing a name you should always go with what names you want for your child and which ones flow well. It seems as if, nicknames are becoming childrens names, so i would think if poeple are focusing on the nickname thats what they should name their child!

I totally agree with you! I hate when people ask the questions "what can i call my friend for a nickname?" That is so stupid. Nicknames should come naturally. They just happen and sometimes the stick. It is OK though if you are thinking of a name for your child, to think what nicknames may be given to him...good and bad...

My son doesn't have a name that has a nickname. After we named him and talked about it we realized that neither do we.

Anyway, I believe many people like the choices that come with a longer formal name. A name suitable for a child doesn't always suit for an adult.

It is kind of nice having a name that only your close family/friends refer to you as, also. When interacting with strangers they will most likely call you by your full name.

I don't know though! SD

I agree with you. Some people are just naming babies the typical nickname like Katie for Katherine.

I have multiple nicknames, but what my parents call me, Mip, does not come from my name at all. My granma used to call me Twinkle-star because I liked the song.

My friend Anthony is called Ninoy, and I have a friend Jeff who is nicknamed "Brad" not in his middle name either.....

Lots of times nicknames come from something silly the child likes to do.....

Well, you want to think of all the possible nicknames that you can... obviously you won't be able to think of all of the possible ones (like when your kid likes a certain thing and gets a name from that), but with the name you can think of possible nicknames and see if you want your child suffering b/c of them.. I know a girl named Sherry, and people call her Scary Sherry, so I would never name my kid that b/c of that nickname... I don't like the nickname Bill, so I would never name my kid William... you have to be aware of possible nicknames so you don't scar your kid for life.

I don't know but I would avoid a name if I didn't like the nickname that commonly goes with it. I am trying to stick with names that have no nickname.

Well, some names lend themselves naturally to nicknames. (Like William or whatever) so people want to consider if you hate that nickname, you might not choose that name.

As for choosing, they might really like a certain name (shortened names, not really nicknames) and then they pick a more formal name to go with that name. (eg. if you like Jack as the name, then you might pick Jackson or something)

Here's an example of why I might chose names around the nicknames that the names made. I do like cute-sounding twin names. However, I also know that the twins (and others around them) don't always appreciate this when they get older. So, I'd chose something like Kristina and Melissa (Krissy and Missy) for twin girls, so they'd have nickname/full name options when they wanted to develop their own identities.

Well, I have two given names when I was born. However, from one of those given names came my nickname which I grew up with. I introduced myself as my nickname. The only time I refer to myself as any of the two given names is in legal situations. Banking, SSI, contracts, etc...

center names are not fairly that huge of a deal, no. they're meant to be waiting to decipher who's who, as i'm specific there are a number of John Smiths obtainable...the middle names are what makes the call distinctive. as an occasion, in the conflict, if there have been 2 John Smiths and that they mandatory to tell family contributors a pair of dying or injury, they could be attentive to who to circulate to. they're extensively utilized to nicely known kinfolk or somebody who has inspired or touched your existence in some way. via fact of this many people have center names after their grandparents, aunts/uncles, or different family contributors. standard, i might perhaps re-examine Kitten and Wolfgang for the reason which you ought to endure in innovations that the babies ought to stay with the call their total lives, no longer you. The call shoes up on identity, record enjoying cards, you call it. and young babies do like looking out each and each others center names. while i grew to become into youthful, there grew to become right into a baby in my classification with the middle call "Napoleon" and he have been given made exciting of for ever and ever. as quickly as different young babies locate out correct to the middle names, they might take care of a similar difficulty. wish i've got helped, Claire
