creaks in a house weather it is new or old are caused by one building material rubbing against another It can be caused by weight (walking on the floor) settling of the foundation wind flexing the structure or materials expanding or contracting from heat or cold ( sunshine, night time, running hot water or the home's heating or air conditioning system) there are several methods to remedy these noises depending what the cause and source and building material.

Even new houses settle. Could be a floor joist, floor board is loose, or the nail has moved which leads to creaking everytime you step on it or it wasn't done right in the first place. Even smallest things can make anything in house creak. Only real problem I have with it is when your trying to be quiet and it sounds like the whole town hear you go by.

The nails holding the boards together loosen their grip over time giving a space for the boards to move. The creaking noise comes from the loose wood rubbing against the nails

To days houses creak more because the material is less stable. sub floors should be glued and screwed to the joists. That is much more costly than shooting nails every two feet. As long as the majority of nails hit the joists, it is considered good. You can stop some of the squeak under carpeting bu screwing into the joist that were missed.

This is normal...differing temperatures in various areas of the house cause expansion and contraction. Newer homes are built on "floating foundations" to accomodate this.
Even skyscrapers are designed to sway back and forth...if they didn't, they would crack apart.

I'll bet your in a cold climate area and if so that's your reason, the cold temps causing contracting and expanding
