The egg would have died without the chicken, but a chicken wouldn't have come to be if it hadn't been an egg first. That's why it is a trick question. If you believe in evolution creating the species, then the chicken egg would be a result of mutation born to a species slightly different, therefore the egg would come first. If you believe that god created everything out of thin air, then the chicken came first. You can make up your own answer and as long you have a logical reasoning, it is right.

The best way to answer that is to say the chicken. The two are inseparable the species evolved from a single cell organism and as the evolutionary process progressed it became necessary for the organism to split off a part of its self like a single cell asexual organism does and hence you have your egg the species most likely at some point evolved a need for two separate sexes and for the formation of an egg and for the need of fertilization for procreation as a result of some adverse condition or other type of threat to the species its self.

The Chicken came first.

In order to have a egg produce a chicken it must be fertilized. This cannot be done by another egg, it must be done by a rooster. Therefore, it is must be deduced that a rooster fertilized a chicken's egg in order for another chicken to have been made. Without the organism present in its adult form, there is no way to make progeny.
