If you're looking into getting a piranhas, please please do your research thoroughly, first. Piranhas are not for newcomes to the hobby or lazy hobbiests who just want a piranha because they think it's cool. There is a lot to know, and I can give you the rought guidelines here, but I would advise you to research indepth online and in books before starting.

Anyhoo, I'm going to assume you're just going for common red-bellies piranhas. If not, you may need to adjust some of this info.

Piranhas are schoolers, and they're big fish (8-11" long). They should be in groups of no less than 5 fish and each fish needs a minimum of 15-20 gallons each. So if you want a school of 5, that's a 75-100 gallon aquarium that you need.

The water should be fairly soft, with a low to neutral pH. They do need a heater, and it should be kept at about 78F.

Piranhas are carnivores, and they love to eat live food, but resist the temptation to feed them exclusively live food. Because, first of all, feeder fish are not all that nutritious and secondly, feeder fish are rife with disease and parasites. You really should raise your own feeders; a tank of guppies would be perfect.
Your 'ranha's staple diet should be a quality pellet with lots of protein, and you can supplement this with beef heart, shrimp, worms and feeder fish.

The tank should be kept very clean, with weekly 30% water changes.
