Have a:

1) Long term career goal that you are working on all the time (example, getting a graduate degree in electrical engineering).

2) Have an intemediate plan that you can use to support yourself
(example: taking a short-term course in electrical appliance repair and working at a shop doing repair work)

3) Have a fall-back plan for when hard times suddenly hit
(experience as a server or roofer that you can fall back on if your intermediate job falls through, while you are working on long-term career goals).

Always move forwards.
