Did you watch the show last night? Pong was a male. I don't care what anyone says. Females do not have long torsos and his voice was deep. Either way, American Idol is looking for the next teenie bopper who is going to do "anything" for money. Look at Sherman, now that is someone that america needs as a role model and they dismissed him just because of his age. This country has always been about materialistic things. The more surgery you have to "enhance" your looks, the more they call you beautiful. This is the sad truth of it. Thank you.

A contestant's look does factor a bit into the equation because the show is looking to promote someone who would be marketable. The judges have passed on many singers due to looks, despite the fact many could outsing those who got through by batting an eyelash at Simon or flexing their pecs for Paula. Sure, talent plays the major role, but looks do round out the total package.
So to a degree, Pong is partially correct, but after watching her audition last night, she just didn't have what I would call, raw talent. Way off key, dancing like she had to pee, not to mention her total "gimmick" seemed rather forced. Not being mean, she seemed like a sweet girl, but unfortunately that's showbusiness.

I think that with American Idol, they are looking for the total package-talent and image. Personally, I believe a person's talent should be placed above how they look. There are a lot of people who have an amazing voice, but are penalized for not having "the look". Strangely enough, and unfairly, the girls are judged far more harshly than the guys. Consider how Clay Aiken was classified as very "geeky" looking. Would a girl with an equally amazing voice and equally geeky look have made it to the final two? I think not. Sorry to say, if a woman doesn't have the sex appeal, she won't make it on American Idol, It's not fair, but it's true.

First of all her name was Fong not Pong...Simon repeatedly got it wrong. Most of all since I have been to the auditions personally, the whole thing is a scam. Those judges aren't even there at the stadiums when the people are trying out. They pull the freaks out of the crowd to add flavor to the show. If you made it past the 15 talbes of judges at the stadium, you had to come back in 2 days to see the real judges. The you had to make it past the producers (15 of them) They were screening the talent out too but just suffice it to say that it is a SHOW! If they didn't have the ugly ones on there...nobody would watch. I met William Hong at the auditions...He was much taller than he appeared on the show. I think they even do some camera tricks to add to the show. Come on do you think that if all the people we see on TV were pretty and handsome we would watch?

I do think that they place a lot of emphasis on a persons looks, or more appropriately stated, a person marketability. The Show is not searching for the most talented or best singer, but rather an "American Idol". They have to choose a person that is a good singer, performer, and a person that they can "sell" to the U.S.A.

Well, i think they do sometimes, but not all the time.
I mean, when the less attractive people do go in to audition, they automatically think the person is going to be complete sh!t, but when they sing and the judges realize the person is actually a really good singer, they usually let them through. Unfortunately, not all the time. And usually the less attractive ones don't last long. You never actually see the less attractive on the actual show, just the auditions and maybe the hollywood auditions.

I think so. I thought the hillbilly girl with the torn pants and the paralyzed father sounded so-so and not unique, but her looks got her through. I have heard better less attractive contestants sent away..

I mean when my boy Simon hinted that Aretha Franklin wouldn't have made it because of her looks, that got me. I still like him but I think he relies a little too much on looks.

I think so but them again this is part of todays society, this show should be based on talent not on looks, I'm surprised it lasted this long.look at the judges they don't have great looks and they're probably not that talented themselves, paula hasn't done anything since "straight up".

It did, but I think America has finally convinced some of the judges and AI staff that looks do NOT count as much as they thought.
