He explained to the judges that his lady of 20 years had been dying from cancer and together, they came up with the idea of getting folks to sign a petition to expand the age limit on American Idol, so that he could audition. He said, however, that she passed away two days prior to the audition. With that, he sang "You Belong to Me", and he did a wonderful job. It was such a moving performance. Simon was nice for a moment and shook his hand.

His wife of 20 years helped him with petition for him to sing on American Idol because he is 62 years old. It was something to kind of keep her hopes up since she was dying of cancer. Sadly, she died 2 days before the audition and didn't get to hear him sing....
I was expecting Simon to be an *** and make him leave, but surprisingly, he let him sing and even shook his hand afterwards.
He sang "You Belong to Me" for his wife. It was really sweet :(

His wife had died 2 days before the audition and he started a petition to get on american idol that his wife had helped him with. Unfortunately, they just let him sing, nothing more.

Long story short - his lady of 20 years was diagnosed with cancer and died two days before the audition. They had worked together on his singing & he had a petition signed by a bunch of people supporting his audition.
The song, "You Belong to Me" was dedicated to his lady love. :-( And he sang it very well. :-)

It was really sad because Paula was crying when he was singing. He had a petition of 330 sigatures or something like that that was saying that age doesn't matter cuz he was like 60 something

his wife was on her death bed and they came up with a plan to get people to sign a petition for support to allow someone who was too old to be on the show. it helped lift her spirits in her last days. the guy was actually a pretty good singer. i thought it was going to be a total disaster but it was actually pretty touching.
