mahatma is MAHA ATMA. A great soul. Indeed he was a great soul. It takes courage to stand for truth. it takes more courage than ANYTHING to let a bunch of britsh officers trash him with sticks and batons and still not raise his anger. It takes freakin courage to say that 'till the day every countrymen of mine has cloth to cover his body....i shall not wear it either.' Try to do that for a luxuary like a fan or a wrist watch let alone for something as basic as clothes. That day you will understand what a MAHA ATMA he was.
And if ur definition of mahatma is to do with sadhus....lol... some of them do not even have a atma let alone being a maha atma.

Yes, Gandhi was a Mahatma. We was able to look beyond his own condition and lead people toward peace and freedom. Regardless of what you think of his politics, you must admit that Gandhi led the Indian people that the British couldn't fight. How do you squash peace. Gandhi lived the life of an acetic. He came up with an approach that no one else had. He served his political and life goals through his religion instead of disregarding it. Most people are worried about paying for their house and sending their children to college and saving for their retirement or going on vacation. Gandhi spent his time worrying about freedom for his country and then doing something about it that did not cost innocent lives.

Cent percent TRUE. Even military generals lead army from behind, but Gandhiji lead the people by standing in front of them. He faced beatings of white police for supporting South African Black population. To achieve freedom for India, he sacrificed his lawyer profession and jailed several occasions. Moved at the sight of poor people, who are not having a piece of cloth, even to cover their modesty; he shunned wearing shirts. And declared "he will not cover his full body, until his fellow Indians are self-sufficient. After achieving the Independence , when all Indians celebrating the occasion, he was confined to Sabarmathi Ashram, alone. These are only few incidents. I feel proud to be an Indian, where Mahatma Gandhi also born.

I think so. Since the definition in English of a mahatma is "great soul", then he definitely fits that category. Mostly, I think, "mahatma" is assigned to god-realized people, sagurus, etc., whose function in their incarnation--which they have come into by choice instead of being still on the wheel of karm, is specifically to teach and inspire people toward more ethical behavior, spiritual growth, and possibly to achieve moksha. However, one reason for the incarnation is to relieve some suffering in people. Since Gandhi did relieve a lot of pain, broke Indians free from the psychologically- and economically devastating abuse during the Raj, as well as helped Indians to regain their dignity and ability to fight for their own destiny, then how could he not have been a mahatma even if he was not a svami or guru in the religious sense? Unfortunately, the one good thing the Raj gave us was a sense of a "common enemy" if even a false sense of it, which helped to curb the inter-Indian violence betwen Hindus and Muslims, whch since emancipation from the British has plagued us to the point at which Bharat is even now cut into bizarre political and geographical units and still suffers from inter-abuse and terrorism. Gandhi tried his best to overcome all that in his people, a very large population of people who are very passionate about their beliefs, etc., so how could he not have been a mahatma?

Definitely he is. Take any of his sayings and match it to today's world events.

Here are some of 'em:

"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?"

"Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary."

"I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent."

These statements will never go wrong till the end of human race.

Politically speaking, its untrue saying India's Independence is because of Gandhi. India would have got it's independence even without him but its because of him we got it by "his way".

This world may see another Gengis Khan, Napolean, Hitler but not another Gandhi who was so successful in implementing his philosophical thoughts into the politics.

Undoubtedly he is a "Mahatma" and will remain the same for all the future generations.

'Mahatma' means a person of great character. What does it require for a person to stand by truth all his life, to stand against the evils of society all his life, to speak the truth? It's character buddy.

I hated him few years ago. But after studying his biography I realised that he was a strong man. It really requires lot of guts to stand to your point when you are right, to oppose the wrongs untill you make the other person realise of his wrong doings. He was the one who could do it. His policy was practically a tough one- 'Just stand by the truth and the false would be eliminated'. It requires guts to tell the truth. Nobdy, I tell you, nobody in this world is 100% honest towards the people around him or towards himself. But he was.

A great mind, a great personality, a great soul.

:-)

His "image" in currency notes as well as MISNOMER aspect would disturb him. His image doesn't fulfill but go against his impeccable qualities in both the cases. Misnomer means A name wrongly or unsuitably applied to a person or an object. Since you like Joyful/satirical/jovial/hilarious replies here comes a fun, The "funny bone" is not a bone—the phrase refers to the ulnar nerve So goes the name Gandhi.

NO, he was not mahatma. people who gave him the title didnt even know the meaning. the one Brahmin who wanted to take revange in Britsh, for the insult he got in Johansburg by some white people led him to India.because of his foolish idologies great heros like Bhgat skng and other were haged.and his one signature caused 1000 death at jalianwala bhag(surprisngly he was not there, when he invited them all) he to keep his friendship with Jinaha, divided Inda and pakistan causing deathe again 1000's and rape murder on the border.he's dream was to establish the Ram rajya, which is mantra of all Brahmins in India. which is causing communal fights between all religions. if it was country without religion in peace and harmony that would have been good. not only that he made inida to give 600 carores to pakistan. aprt from him many millions died, could we remember them. he by force removed the president(iron man) who played wital role in defeating pakistan. if the same president was there we could have own war with china. even it was this man who is bhind the misterious disappearance of Great Subhas chand Bhose.for forming militry. socan we call this Brahmin the MAHATMA
