Yes depo has lots off after-effects. Long periods...weight gain...etc...

For me one of the biggest reasons I opted for a low-dose BC pill instead was the fact that when my sister-in-law who took depo decided that she and my brother wanted to have a child finally it took 4 years for it to get out of her system.. They sought a fertility specialist who told them that this is an unfortunately common side-effect.

You know what is right for you, however be forewarned of all of the possible side-effects.

A few months after I stopped using the Depo-provera shot or any birth control at all, I had a "period" that lasted 9 weeks. Yes, 9. I finally went to the hospital and the only reason they could give me was it was because of the high hormone levels in the birth control shot, and they don't yet know if it will have any long-term effect on me. They did say though that I was not the only woman thta had come in with that same problem, it is quite common to miss several periods on this shot and then have one that lasts a VERY long time.

I took Depo 3 times. I spotted for about 5 or so months then no period. When I stopped taking it, it took a while for my period to come back. I also gained a lot of weight. It changed my metabolism a lot. I used to be really tiny and it made me gain about 25-30lbs. And I didn't change any of my habits. I wouldn't recommend the Depo shot to anyone.

I must be the only one on the face of the earth who had zero problems with Depo. I did NOT gain weight, and I was on it for four years. Once I stopped, it took about six months for my period to return, although it took a couple months for it to become regular. All forms of birth control affect each woman differently. All forms of birth control carry the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other, less serious problems, such as weight gain, or headaches. These are problems that your own normal hormones can cause, as well. I wish people were more informed about birth control!

For some women, it causes you not to have your period. But for others, like me, it made me have it for weeks on end. I was miserable.
