You should definitely be feeding them greens and veggies. They won't choke on the peas, but if you're worried about them, remove the pea's outter skin and split it in two with your tumb, and drop it in the tank. You can also give them duckweed - if you don't have any growing yourself, you can ask around with local hobbiests, as many people have duckweed infestions and love to give it away.
You can also feed them pieces of earthworms and a variety of frozen, meaty foods, and you can alter between 2 or 3 different brands of goldfish pellets.

I give my goldfish bits of apple, peas, cucumber, seedless grape, romaine lettuce. (skins removed & chopped up fine) They are omnivores, so sometimes I offer brine shrimp (freeze dried, frozen or for a real treat live) tubifex worms, bloodworms earthworms, I also mix up the flake & pellets offering different brands.
As long as you chop up the veggies small enough to fit inot the mouth, then you really dont have to worry about them choking on it. I usually offer treats 3-4 times a week. Variety is the spice of life. Try some different veggies. See what your goldies like, and net out any food they don't eat within a half hour

Goldfish definitely need a variety of foods. Not because they get bored, but actually for their physical health. You can give pellets instead of flakes sometimes, although they are the same difference (always pre-soak flakes or pellets before feeding to prevent swelling in the goldfish's abdomen) as regular food, and then as regular treats, they need dark green lettuces (not iceberg or butterleaf, etc.), spinach, boiled, mashed peas with the skins removed, cut up earthworms, boiled cut up eggs, cucumbers, grapes, oranges, kiwis, brine shrimp, blood worms, krill, tubifex, plankton, spirullina, daphnia and duckweed. They also like gel food, which is made from boiled, mashed peas with the skins removed, or various vegetable baby foods mixed with plain gelatin until it sets up firm and cut in small cubes. Mmmmm...... just remember to remove what they won't or don't eat...

Oranges are great, cucumber boiled soft, with peas you always take off the skin and then you can chop them up small for small fish. I take a few frozen peas, put them in the fish net and hold them under running hot water for about 20 seconds, then I pop off the skins and cut the peas into little pieces.

Freeze dried tubafex worms. You can find these in any pet store. When I had an aquarium, I used to feed these to my fish I would hold these in my hand and taught my fish to eat out of my hand. They look like a beef boullioun cube when you first take them out of the package.
My fishes loved them!
