There have been a few diesel powered race cars.

Under the usual racing rules they're not as good as gasoline powered cars because they are larger and heavier engines than a gasoline engine with the same power. The reason is the ultra high compression needed to ignite the fuel, which requires larger and heavier parts. The weight and size are not issues in powering a truck, but they are in powering a racecar.

They have been used in a few races where the rules were more favorable to diesels, like LeMans and the Dakar Rally.

They fuel is dirty and does not produce the kind of hp that is needed for racing. Diesel engines produce a lot of low end torque which is better for pulling or towing.
