I think we took this in sociology class. They raise the volume because studies showed that test apes responded better to higher volumes, and flashy colour and paid attention. Therefore, all advertisers see us as stupid apes with money to blow.

The maximum volume is actually the same. The difference is that it is always loud in a commercial while normal shows vary the volume throughout the show depending on the action.

I've always thought that the sponsors know we use commercial time to go out to the kitchen for a snack, or go to the bathroom, so I swear they raise the volume in hopes of us hearing them anyway. I guess also the fact that commercials are filmed separately and added on in the breaks, maybe they were just recorded louder..but maybe not...or am I just paranoid?

To get our attention...as if we arent already sitting there. Thats soo irritating! Especially when u hv children asleep in the next room..I hv to wait for the commercial to start, lower volume n then rush to do what ever I need to do b4 show starts again.

It's the "ugly American" stance. Like, when talking to someone who does not understand, we tend to repeat and do it louder. (as if volume will help) The advertisers think we are slow & ignorant, and playing the message louder will appeal to us.
