Many mineral crystals are of an octagonal shape, even hexagonal, pentagonal, etc.

Pure salt (sodium Cloride) forms perfect cubes.

I would suggest that you get several minerals, epson salt, sodium cloride, copper nitrate, copper sulfate and others, and dissolve them in warm water until they are completely dissolved and then place them in a room where they can evaporate very slowly and see what types of crystals form from them. Each will have its own basic shape and the more dissolvable salts that you will, the more different shapes you will find.

I'm with Jack. Look at the patterns in natural things. Honeycombs? Fish scales? Look through a magnifying glass at flowers, turtles, any thing in your backyard.
