Not always. Your doc should be able to detect a heartbeat at his office with a doppler (if you are far enough along). Please try not to worry about everything -- it's not good for either of you. I know how you feel though. I always loved going to the doctor during pregnancy and being able to hear the heartbeat for myself.

Unfortunately, not always. It happened to me- heart stopped beating around 7 wks but I never bled. BUT they usually cannot hear the heart until much later than that. Doctors found out during an early ultrasound that there was no heartbeat. He said it happens occasionally and the doctor said that sometimes when women start to bleed, it could be that the pregnancy terminated some time ago but only then is the body getting rid of it.
I wish I could tell you what you wanted to hear. Hopefully you don't have real reason to be afraid and are just doing the normal pregnant "what if" kind of thinking. We all do it. But if you are concerned because heartbeat cannot be HEARD, as long as it can be seen on the ultrasound, it just means your baby is down in there hiding....

In rare cases a baby can be reabsorbed and you wouldn't bleed. However this is very rare and only happens very early on in pregnancy.
Do take care of yourself and try no to worry too much. Also as you are already nervous consider not doing an ultrasound, or at least not one until 20 weeks. Trust me in most cases an ultrasound just makes you feel worse, because they aren't definite. More than 10% as listed before are uncertain. Even with the best ultrasound it is only probable not definite.
"Up to 10% of pregnancy ultrasound results can be 'uncertain'. This is where the ultrasound image cannot be easily interpreted and it is not definitely known whether there is a problem or not. This can leave parents in a state of limbo, making for a very stressful pregnancy. In one study, mothers with a 'questionable' result were still anxious 3 months after their baby was born (Sparling et al. 1988). "

You poor thing! I remember how paranoid I was throughout the pregnancy. If it wasn't miscarriage, it was a missing limb!
Don't worry, I'm sure you will deliver a healthy baby. If your baby doesn't have a heartbeat, you won't know it until an ultrasound. Even then, it will sometimes take weeks for your body to expel it. Or, your doctor will do a D & C.
I'm sure eveything it fine. Try to relax and think positively!! Your baby is fine.
Congratulations!

You need to have an ultrasound with a device that has a microphone in order to hear it. They sell them in the stores like Target and Walmart, but the professional ones are really good. Sometimes it takes the doctor to search the baby's position to find the heartbeat, and if it is too early you may not be able to hear it. I would not worry until I get to the doctor, stress can also cause you unneeded problems during pregnancy.

My bestfriend was pregnant and had been pregnant for about 9 weeks. When she went to get her first sonagram she found out that the baby had no heartbeat and had stopped growing at 6 weeks. Because she didn't expell the baby naturally she had to have a procedure done to have it removed. With that all said, you shouldn't worry about it. Stress is a very dangerous thing and my friend was going through alot. You will be fine. Enjoy your pregnancy and everything will work out for the good.
