This Clemson thing has me worked up. I would say that on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being a minimal nuissance and 10 being a major hinderance, we're at a 7.

If you're unaware of the Clemson situation, a bunch of white college students decided to dishonor MLK day by dressing up as "gangstas" and having a party. It happened at other schools as well.

Not sure enough people are being honest. I grew up in a neighborhood where EVERYONE was racist. If I wasn't blessed with parents to teach me that stuff was wrong, who knows what would have happened to me.

i am from pittsburgh pa and i moved to pcb florida 5 years ago there is a lot of racism here wither people want to admit it or not espically in the south , the n word is prominent in the local vocabulary and i have worked at a few places who would not hire anyone who was black if they came in to fill out an application the "job was taken" i stopped working for these people because i can't respect there views i was raised that all people are just people it didn't matter where they were from or what color or language they spoke i had eyes opened when i moved here and not just the color issue there are many people here who openly talk of their dislike for yankees ( i had no idea i was a yankee untill i moved here) there are signs and banners waving all around the town with the rebel flag and sayings like "yankees not welcome in this store" or "no parking for yankees" at the job i mentioned i was introduced like this "this is sarah she's a yankee" like i had some sort of defect or 3 boob's or something so yes wither people want to admit it or not racism is still prominent in the south more so than the north not to say there's no predjuice up there it's just less prominate and i think most people in the north are more open minded... i have an 8 year old son who i speak with all the time on this issue i am trying to teach him as my parents taught me that every one is human and equal but he does see both sides at school they called him a n-lover because he has a few friend of different races but we hashed all that out so i hope my son will continue to make up his own mind and respect all people ...i would like to move home but i am stuck here because of a costudy aggrement with his dad and i but soon as he's 18 i am outta here.....

I don't think the Clemson thing was a problem and neither was the Texas thing. When a group of people dress up like another group of people, its not a big deal. Now, it would've been a problem if they were trying to emulate racism. However, I believe it was an emulation of sarcasm. We do not critize the minority when they try to play sarcasm on the majority.
to mommasquarepants,
If you have never lived in the South, don't presume to "know" that we're more racist.

Racism has been around for thousands of years. It's nothing new. Wouldn't it be soooo good it didn't exist ?! I have traveled all around the U.S. and now live in a spot that seems like the last "stronghold" of southern racism. When I got here I was astonished ! Never have I seen it so bad. Well, that was 12 yrs ago and through a lot of defiance and persistance things are slowly changing (as the old-timers die out). Keep the faith !!!

What would we argue about if it were not for racism ,abortion ,gun control ,taxes ,terrorism ,religion ,politics, war, hate ,obsession, Seems we are happiest when mocking others or arguing about mocking others .
I am over this so called politically correct environment that attaches much more meaning to everything then it merits .
Bad taste yes ,poor judgment certainly ,But getting naked and having an orgy would draw attention also . Seems We need to dress in suits and ties have a glass of $80.00 wine and plan the over through of the world . Like our politicians and lobbyist groups who arrive in limos dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns to sit back and discuss how the world will turn over the next two years . These kids had a few drinks and a theme on a party that was bound to draw some attention . Had they done a female impersonation party where you had to dress up as Liza or Barbra or Marylin , they would of come under attack from the pro gay rights movement .
As far as I am concerned people need to grow a thicker skin and get over it .
I am sure, how ,what, where, when ,and who you party with in the future is of some concern to those politically correct idiots who plan to go into government work but as for most, I see kids just being kids doing silly things just like adults do silly things also ..
It is just as bad to attack these students as it was for them to have a Gangsta themed party .
They should of just dressed up as the English lords and lady's did 200 years ago but I suppose that men in white wigs would offend someone .
Lets just stop breathing now and get over offending everyone . Except the undertaker .
Maybe a condi themed party where everyone is covered from the ankles to the neck would be appropriate . Since when did it become a crime to mock others . If I dressed up in a suit and paraded around talking about bringing freedom to the people of Iraq my social group would say I had lost my mind .

There are people of all races who have racial problems wherever they go. There are people of all races who have no racial problems wherever they go. That means something.
In America we are all free to address racial problems and resolve them.
I believe each succeeding generation is becoming less rascist.
My children have none and hear of none. I remember as a child hearing some rascist stuff like kids rhymes and things like that but I've been careful not to pass them on.
I think its still a problem in America but its decreasing every year.
Lets not excuse any racism by any race against any other.
I'd say 3

They were kids poking fun of another culture's dress and actions.
I don't like the gangster look but I am not against blacks. Kevin Federline (Brittney's ex) is a great example of gangster white.
Racism and PC hinder common sense. I feel bad for the Duke boys accused by the black hooker and had their lives turned upside down for months. It is somehow treated differently if whites do something to blacks - that's racism and I think that is the WORST racism at this point in time.

Honestly, I think it really depends on where you are in the United States. The southern states like Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, etc. seem to have more racism than the more northern and western states. Obviously small amounts exist all over, which is horrible, but to me it seems like it is more wide spread in the South.

It looks like a celebration of the hip-hop culture to me. The ubiquitous hip-hop trash culture that one is bombarded with daily.
Perhaps the dominant hip-hop culture needs to be ridiculed more for the anti-intellectual, depraved, animal-lust culture it is.
You almost cannot escape the hip-hop rap crap or the "gangsta" crap anywhere. It's a trash culture, and should be treated and abused as such.
Tell me I'm wrong.

On your scale, I'd say that we're at a 3.
I'm having trouble understanding what the "let's dress up like gangstas" incident has to do with hindering anybody.
