You usually have pop-ups due to a spyware or other software you are unaware of. These softwares can be installed on your PC unknowingly in multiple ways:

- You don't have a firewall or it wasn't configured correctly;
- You went on a website that seemed fine but secretly installed a software on your PC (Microsoft IE, due to ActiveX, are particularly vulnerable);
- You installed pirated software that had extra code added to it;
- You opened an email that was infected.

Once you have these pop-ups, try an anti-spyware program such as MS Defender or Ad-Aware to remove it. Note that some programs can not be uninstalled.

To prevent this:

- Upgrade your software. Patches may resolve security issues;
- Install Firefox (www.getfirefox.com). It has less security holes than IE;
- Don't open email attachments from unknown senders;
- Install an anti-virus, an anti-spam and an anti-spyware program.

Good luck!
