We have a Black Molly that started giving birth to her fry today, and everyone of the fry had bubbles on their bellies that ruptured soon after birth, resulting in death. What causes this and how can it be prevented next time? I also raise Guppies and have never seen or heard of this problem before. If anyone knows anything about this problem, please help.I don't know if the gestation period is the same for Mollies as it is for Guppies(28 days),but the Molly took over a month, almost a month and half to give birth. What is the gestation for Mollies? Is it the same as Guppies and if so, could the length of time held in the womb resulted in this?

The gestation for mollys is a little bit longer than with guppies, but just a few days. Like with people, it can vary some. and a few days one way or the other is not usually any problem.

The bubbles you are seeing are most likely the yolk sac, or at least the best bet. That is usually the result of too short gestation, but that doesn't appear to be the case here. There are other potential causes for a bubble on the belly, almost all of which are genetic. Be sure to give the female a quite place for the last few weeks of the gestation period and see if this helps. If the next batch hasthe same problem after a typical gestation time, I would get rid of those Mollies and try a new set.

My molly gave birth about a week ago and some of hte babies had a red sac on there bellies, they were premature and ended up dying. But I still have about 12 babies that didn't have the red sac and they are doing great!

The gestation period for livebearers is usually 28 days but can range from 20 to 40 days. http://www.fishlore.com/BreedingGuppies.htm
