Yes they should be protected. More and more fields are going the way of the dodo, and this is disheartening. More kids are finding less place to get together to play games. A simple thing of getting together to play football is proving more work just to find a place to kick a ball. It's also unethical to use a place designated as an open field in a residential area to be turned into a councilor's side project.

The links below will take you to the website of the National Playing Fields Association who specialise in protecting and forcing local councils to protect playing fields.

They are a charity organisation set up by King George the 5th. Have a look at the site and get involved :-).

My father used to work for them as a fundraiser and he successfully managed to force councils into maintaining playing fields by use of the courts on several occasions.

We are facing same prolems here in Maharashtra. Either those open speces are sold to builders or encroached by "bhayyas" of UP and Bihar. Even these illegal people capture the footpaths also, they have done encroachment inNational Park also. So, all these things National Parks, empty speces, footpaths as well as railway-lines should be given protected status.( By the way, you people are lucky that you don't have "Bhayyas" to make your gities dirty.
