could it be because the temperature is too warm? they even get under things like the bridge and under leaves. the temp is at 70-72 if i remember correctly. or is it normal for them? are they just bored? I actually have three (all males) of them in there, they don't fight with each other anymore, i bought them about 2 months ago, the first week, they fought each other, now they stopped, they even stay at the bottom together. and they're starting to grow their fins back.

It could be several things. Temperature is not your problem. In fact, they'd probably like it a little warmer. I usually keep my bettas in the high 70s.

What are your water parameters like? If the water quality is poor, they could be stressed. Also, having several males together isn't the best idea, even if they don't fight. They just stress each other out. The only time you can really get away with it is in a large aquarium with lots of hiding spaces.

Is there a lot of water current from your filter? Bettas prefer slow moving water and will often exhaust themselves swimming against the current.

Hope this helps.

My bet would be that they are all stressed from the constant exposure to each other. Try this: Get two large containers ( about a gallon would be best but 2 quarts will do fine and fill them with tank water. Place 1 betta in each and see if they all don't perk up in a day or so. Odds are good they all will with a few days at most. If this is the case you will need to keep the extra two in bowls or something similar or find new homes for them.

While they may not fight and kill each other (bettas rarely do actually) the stress from being together like that can kill them.

the temperature is actually kind of cool for them. upper 70s are better. they are probably a little bored. try putting some plants in. silk plants with big leaves from the petstore are fine. get them big enough they reach the top of the water. i have perked up lots of bettas just by giving them something to swim around. in a sterile environment they don't swim much. put some stuff in there for them to swim around and they generally will.

how big is your tank anyway? they could have their little territories staked out and a bigger tank would encourage them to get around a little more.

Its not you...it might be your fish. I had beta fish and they always stayed at the bottom (like yours) and ONLY came up when I fed them. I didnt know what was wrong. So i thought it was the tank and got a new one. When i got it home and into the room, I saw it was cracked...and i had already taken out the fish and the Stuff from the tank. I put it in differently and they then swam everywhere. Its seemed like they just wanted a change!!!

The Beta we have in the office stays at the bottom as well. He likes to hide under the roots though, and the aquarium is definatly not to warm, because often times when we come into work in the mornings the office is cold and betas don't have to have a heater in the water to survive.
