I have to write an essay about whether I think it is or isn't accept to break the law under certain circumstances. I read an article about Martin Luther King and how he went to jail for standing up for his people. I agree, that at times it IS acceptable to break the law but I need a current or recent situation that backs up my opinion. I can't think of any recent situations that are similar to that. Can someone give me some ideas please?

Think about protests; right now, big protest issues are the war in Iraq, animal experimentation, same-sex marriage, abortion... Often, when a person or group of people protest against a law they think is unjust, they end up breaking the law.

Another good one in the past is the French resistance--all the people who fought the Nazi occupation of France, sheltered Jews illegally, etc.

Currently, there are a lot of stories about Ehren Watada, a US soldier who refused to deploy to Iraq on the grounds that the war itself is illegal. He's getting in all sorts of trouble with the military. Here's one story:

But there are tons and tons more. And if that one doesn't do it for you, look up any political/social movement, and check out the tactics its members have used.

This article from Wikipedia on Civil Disobedience gives a good overview of where the idea came from, as well as some examples of when it has been used:

I believe it is correct to break the lawy when someone is an activist trying for better rights of human kind. Some examples of today would be whale activists in Japan. There are some whalers in Japan that kill whales and sell the meat - these animals are endangered. Some of the protests against these whalers have been against the law see the attached. There is also an article about Berma police obtaining a few student activists. The problem with breaking the law was against the police officers because they were trying to stop the activists from getting hurt - they held the students for not breaking the law - which is illegal. I would suggest looking up information about activisits, you will find lots of information. Plus, police break the law all the time to better the social system of the community. Take a look at that. Good Luck with the report!

I would do an essay on Oskar Schindler. He broke the law but in doing so, he saved one thousand people from destruction by his fellow Nazis. He broke the law by bribing people and selling and trading on the black market. It may seem like a long time ago, but it really isn't. There are still eyewitness alive.
