Microsoft is a software company, Apple is a computer manufacturer there is the difference
Now if your asking which operating system is the best then it has to be Apple and their software is better than MS, but more Expensive
now if your thinking of new operating systems that won't cost you a penny and is better than MS then take a look at Suse Linux you can download it for free and all the software you'll ever need comes with it, or you can buy it with support for $60.00 from below web address
it is called Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.2

Apple. I used to be a windows user, then I switched and found that it's what a computer should be. I could go on forever about why Macs are better than PCs, but I have to get to work today. So to sum it up:
1. Stability
2. Performance
3. Looks Amazing
With Windows, rebooting 3-4 times a day for unknown errors became something you get used to, therefore you accept it as "the way it just works". Mac doesn't do that - it actually works.

Define "better", if you mean better by quality, reliability then of course Apple is better, if you mean better by flexibility, functionality then Microsoft is better.
I won't advice anyone but the professional multimedia user to switch to Mac OS. Because Apple is foolish and greedy, they want to earn money but they are doing it wrong, they should allow their OS to work in PCs and provide support for plenty of languages and hardware just like Microsoft, but I think they are just afraid of being in the fast lane!
Note: I'm comparing the operating systems not the hardware.

Neither, Microsoft is too big, and has complicated software that costs a lot of money, and is prone to many viruses and spyware. Apple still doesn't have a big enough market share, and its hard to get software for mac.

Microsoft has more options, but the tradeoff is less stability and less easy to use. Apple has a nice streamlined interface, but the tradeoff is less options and less software.
Microsoft has tons of free software (www.nonags.com), and what you buy today (or bought yesterday) will work on later versions of windows.
Apple has less software, and it doesn't support capability between it's other versions of its OS.
Microsoft is buggier, cheaper, and more flexible. Apple is easier, reliable, and more expensive.

Option C
Linux.
It can run on almost anything, and it's getting so user friendly that seniors can use it now...
Stable, easy, and free.
And if you try to claim that Vista's prettier... take a look on YouTube for videos of "Beryl+Linux".
