You don’t necessarily have to buy the brand name Robitussin. You can use any brand that is a guaifenesin-only expectorant and contains 100 mg per teaspoon. Whether you choose Robitussin or another brand, it is very important to avoid the types that contain decongestants or antihistamines. These ingredients may dry up the cervical mucus. Also, there are conflicting reports about whether cough medicines containing dextromethorphan may be linked to some birth defects. For those with Diabetes, there are Diabetic versions available. In any case, you should use caution when purchasing the Robitussin.

When should I start taking the Robitussin and how much?
Every woman’s cycle varies so there is not one set day to take the expectorant. You should plan to start the regimen about five days before ovulation. Many women chart their cycles by taking their Basal Body Temperature and charting cervical mucus to determine the day of ovulation. However, if you are not charting and are not sure of ovulation time, it is suggested to start taking the Robitussin around cycle day 10 (10 days after the first day of your period).

The recommended dose is 1-2 teaspoons twice daily. You should drink a full glass of water with the dose and plenty of water during the day. Good hydration aids the production of mucus. If you do not notice a thinning out of mucus in a few days, you can try 1-2 teaspoons three times daily. You must be careful not to go over the suggested daily dosage on the bottle.

Misconception
One common misconception about this method is the effect Robitussin has on the mucus. Robitussin does not increase the volume of cervical mucus produced. It simply thins it out to make it easier for the sperm to penetrate.

If you don't notice enough cm you could also try using a lubricant called preseed. they have a website and you can buy it on drugstore.com. It is suppose to allow sperm to swim through unlike regular lubricant which could kill sperm even if that isn't it's intended purpose. It's a little expensive though so I'd look for other signs of ovulation (like cervical position and firmness) so you can use it around those days.

And to actually answer your question try starting it a few days before you expect to ovulate and stop after you know you've already ovulated. You can use anything with guaifessen and only that in it, if it contains other active ingredients those will probably dry you out. Mucinex or a store brand of it will also work too.

i heard about that too. I read it somewhere that women take Robitussin but not sure when to start (may be when you're ovulating).
