The West has many enemies that happen to be oil producing countries. We must do much more to wean ourselves from our oil dependency but at the same time be careful not to make human food crops prohibitely expensive. I am referring to the rise in the price of corn creating food protests in Mexico. If there is one thing we need to think hard about is avoiding destabilizing Mexico it would be a mess too close to home to deal with.

So put a 30% tax on every gas guzzler out there for our national security.

The enemy is right here in this nation . Those people afraid to accept change and move forward to solutions that may or may not be in the interests of those who have poured millions of dollars into the campaigns of politicians to maintain the current way of doing things .
We will fail as a nation if we do not do our best to Use the technology on hand at this time and quit waiting for the so called miracle break through that is just around the corner .
Our dependence on oil could have been reduced dramatically in just the past 15 years had we applied the same amount of money to energy independence we did into a war that can not be won . It has lined the pockets of those who do not want change ,not because they do not see that it is beneficial but because they want to squeeze every penny possible out of the investments they made 30 years ago and longer .
Changing and updating equipment that is still useful makes bad business sense to most yet it is possible to work vigorously in the direction of change and slowly reduce the reliance on previous investments and still come out ahead . Taxing Suv's would only hurt the economy at this point slow production and put an end to hundreds of thousands of jobs .
We have alternatives and people with the ability and desire to move forward need to lead this nation away from oil and into the next generation of energy renewable fuels .

I think that you need to take into consideration, that some people can't afford new vehicles, and some people need suvs and trucks for various different reasons. I think that the answer is in alternative fuels that are clean and green, and can be made to work in existing vehicles. Maybe some kind of adjustment could be made to existing engines to make them work with the alternative fuel source. Help (assistance) should be given to all those who cannot afford to make the adjustment on their own!!! Then, of course, some kind of tax credit or something, for all who can afford to by a new vehicle, and choose to by a hybrid or a full electric car...once they become available to the public!!!

It would be really hard to determine what is a "gas guzzler" since a lot of people drive trucks because of their profession, like mason or construction work. Would it be fair to tax them because they require a larger vehicle for hauling. Looking for ways to create greener energy seem more sensible then raising the taxes of soccer moms.

Silly question. NO, you do NOT punish the user. The manufacturer simply must be required to produce them within the set requirements established by the government themselves !! If it is within the guidelines, then no one is at fault. Tax credits for highly efficient vehicles I can definitely see, but EXTRA tax for less efficiency ? That's a big NO.

Maybe we should limit the number of times per year the President is allowed to power up Air Force One at an hourly cost to taxpayers of $56,800.

Since they already use more gas, they are already paying more in tax.
