Dawgy gave a good answer.

You'll also want to consider your skills. The field you're talking about is called aeronautical engineering. It's absolutely required that you have excellent math skills. If you don't enjoy math, this is a bad field for you. You'll also need good computer skills, but you don't need to be a programmer.

Remember also that there aren't a lot of big companies designing airplanes. In the US, other than Boeing, they almost all are part of the defense industry. There are some smaller companies designing and building airplanes, but the number of new jobs this represents nationwide is probably exceedingly small (like a handful). I don't have any hard numbers. So I would recommend you do some research on the job market to see if you'll be able to find work once you get your degree. The market could be a lot better than I think it is, so don't take my word on it.

Good luck. It's an exciting field.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerospace_engineering#Aerospace_engineering_degrees
"Aerospace engineering degrees
Aerospace (or aeronautical) engineering can be studied at the bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. levels in aerospace engineering departments at many universities, and in mechanical engineering departments at others."

"Aerospace engineers design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles and supervise the production of these products. Those who work with aircraft are called aeronautical engineers, and those working specifically with spacecraft are astronautical engineers"

Many colleges have Aerospace engineering departments.... so I suggest you look at a few and see thier requirements.....

Here's an example....
http://www.erau.edu/db/degrees/ma-aerospaceeng.html

"There are plenty of programs that teach aerospace engineering, but only one place where the entire university is dedicated to aviation and aerospace. For more than 75 years, Embry-Riddle has been a recognized leader in aviaiton research and education. Present at the creation of the profession, Embry-Riddle has grown with the industry."

I'm not certain if they are the best place for a degree but it's a great resource for seeing what you are getting into.

I would also suggest looking up some Aerospace companies and then looking at where the engineers they list attended school.

Hope I helped you!!

You can go to a school that. There is a very good school in Virginia Beach, VA. It costs around $32,000.00 to go and that is just to learn to work on aircraft. Then you will need to go on to a tech school to learn to be an engineer to build them, but it's a very good field. Don't let the cost discourage you. Beleave me when I say that you will make very, very good money doing this. Who knows, you may even be the one to design the first interplanetary spaceship. First ship to Venus or Saturn.
