He had children of his own so he decided to only make movies that families could watch together. During the process of going from 'cop action' movies to 'disney' movies, he ended up making a few duds. Maybe when his kids are grown he'll reprise one of his classic comedy roles. I do know 'Beverly Hills Cop IV' is scheduled for release in 2009, but I'm not really jumping up and down waiting for that sequel. I'd rather see a '48 Hours 3' or 'Trading Places 2'... :-)

Supposedly, as rumor has it:
Art Buchwald wrote a novel during the 50's. It was about a prince who visits America, looking for a bride. etc. Allegedly, Murphy took the book, transformed it into a script, without Buchwald's ok, and said he wrote...Coming To America. {but everyone knows, Hollywood people can't even write their own name, without copying it off someone else...}
Not sure if that was the reason for his decline in popularity, but the aging ones in Hollywood are making a fortune off cartoons.
ie. Shrek.
Murphy probably made more money from the Shrek movies, than from all of those shallow,corny 80's movies put together.

He hasn't really been idle, but doing more children's movies. It could also have been that he had made enough money that he just took it easy for awhile. He is terribly talented, and scandal never seemed to bother the public before. Even when it should.

No Eddie Murphy was taken to the other side by the European's. Once they get you, you belong to them unless you murder your white wife, or get caught up in a scandal that you can't come back from.
Peace

He started to make a lot of bad film choices (starting with his directorial debut).
If you catch Last week's Entertainment Weekly magazine (Eddie is on the cover), it tells the whole sordid story

He had admitted in Oprah that he took his time to be with his family and enjoyed it a lot without working much.
Recent films were not successful except for Shrek. There are some big flops,too.

Like Steve Martin he just stopped being funny. It would also have helped if he'd stuck to adult orientated humour.
