I think "The New York Times" obit said it best: "Sidney Sheldon, an Oscar- and Tony-winning writer of squeaky-clean fare for stage and screen who became world famous for his later career as a writer of steamy, best-selling novels, died on Tuesday..."

His work as a screen writer and playwright are more impressive than his achievements as a novelist -- though "The Other Side Of Midnight" was a solid piece of writing.

As the king of commercial fiction Sheldon dominated the book racks of drugstores, airports, and hotel lobbys. While his work was formula driven he kept a large part of the population picking up books -- an achievement in-and-of-itself. For that he deserves our praise.

I can't say I particularly care for Sheldon's novels to be honest; I have, over the last few years, enjoyed the magazine article work he produced. I found that well written and insightful.

We all have authors we clamor for and suit our tastes more precisely -- this morning I'm saddened by the loss of Molly Ivins.

Again, going to "The New York Times", they had this to say of Ivins' arrival at the paper: "In 1976, her writing, which she said was often fueled by 'truly impressive amounts of beer,' landed her a job at The New York Times. She cut an unusual figure in The Times newsroom, wearing blue jeans, going barefoot and bringing in her dog, whose name was an expletive."

Ivins feared no one, once saying of a respected Texas congressman "If his I.Q. slips any lower, we’ll have to water him twice a day." This while she was a reporter in Dallas!

The world is a lesser place this week -- and what a hard week it's been. We've lost the screenwriter that gave us "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Socker"; one of the wittiest columnists left in America; and a horse that made us all more compassionate with his determination against all odds.

Winter really can be the "cruelest season of all."

i'm no longer a hardcore fan of his yet might his soul relax in peace. My popular Sidney Sheldon novel is "If the following day Comes" and that i like the miniseries much greater valuable. i'm hoping they're going to coach all his television movies on Cinemax or Hallmark to honor him (cos i genuinely want a recorded reproduction of "If the following day Comes" miniseries).
