How long do I let the avocado rot before I dig out the pit and sprout it? Any other tips would be appreciated, thanx!

Rot? Why let it rot? Just let the flesh get soft enough to eat. Generally, 4 days in a paper bag will do the trick. Then put the pit in a glass of water, half in air. Put it on the windowsill and it should sprout Remember, it takes a LONG time to produce fruit. 12 years if I recall correctly.

My husband (the green thumb) says you don't have to let it rot, take it out when it's fresh. Whack it good with a sharp knife to gash it, not cut it through, then plant it indoors until it's sprouted well. That way the roots will be able to come out. Take care of it as any other seedling. When it's outgrowing the pot, that's the time to transplant it outdoors.

So says the man who's growing a mango tree from a pit right now.

Plant the pit while fresh in a deep pot (the initial root will be quite long and will grow straight down).
Plant with the "pointy" end down, with the flat side flush with the surface of the potting mix.
Keep soil moist (not soaked) until sprouted.
This all takes a while but it makes a beautiful plant.
