it's more than likely your cooling fan making the noise. It's attched w/ a clutch assembly(heat activated normally). when fully engaged usually after sitting in a hot condition, its sounds like you explained. with the engine off. open the hood and see if you can spin the fan by hand. if it doesn't then you probably have a bad fan clutch.

It is most likely the clutch on your engine cooling fan.GM has plenty of problems with this on numerous models due to the sub-contracted manufacturer of this part(sub-grade).
