Assuming that your car is passing all state emissions tests, I'd keep it. Sadly, your 1997 "gas guzzler" isn't getting much different mileage than most the cars on the road. I've been doing tons of research on what car to purchase: I want something that can carry 4 adults comfortably, has a decent size trunk, has a good safety rating, looks halfway decent (bye bye Honda Element) and gets better mileage than the 18 mpg I'm getting on my 1999 Chevy. So far, no luck.
So, from an environmental standpoint, you're not helping the environment with your Camaro, but you'll never be able to replace it with anything similar to it, either, unless you're willing to drive a compact car (I'm certainly not). Hopefully, technology will catch up to consumer needs sometime soon.

Dude, My 87 Camaro gets about 6 mpg. Take off slow, o wait where's the fun in that?
Think about it this way. say you buy a 2004 "environmentally friendly car" that gets 35mpg. how much do you think the loan payments are going to be(assuming your camaro is already paid for) Is the raise in payments and insurance worth the extra 20 mpg? besides, you can't show off in an enviromentally friendly car.

Have you done your part by keeping the car well maintained? Can you drive with out stomping the go pedal all the time/ Then you have to decide what you want. If the car is the love of your life there are tons of aftermarket solutions for added mileage. Or if the car is a throw away like for most Americans your question is rhetorical.

Its Camaro! Who cares?! You don't buy one to be economical. You should sell it and let someone enjoy it the way it was meant to be used.
And what are the environmental costs of selling a car? That doesn't make any sense.

Wow, if you think 16 MPG is bad, then switch vehicles with me, my Dodge Dakota R/T gets 9-11 MPG city and maybe 16 on the highway.
