You can try St. John's Wort. It's a natural mood enchancer you can get in the vitamin - herb section of most supermarkets.
Some good prescription ones are Wellbutrin and Lexapro. They have less sexual side effects than some of the other SSRI's out there.

Before resorting to self medicating or even taking prescription anti-depressants, see a doctor who is not against natural healing. I am 40, female, and was very tired, depressed and not sleeping. My reg. doc wanted to put me on sleep aides and an anti-depressant. My pharmacist recommended I see an OB-GYN who is current on plant based hormone replacement therapy. The OB tested my hormones and they were all whacked out. I now take a prescription grade multi-vitamin and a B-vitamin complex. She also prescribed a transdermal cream because my progesterone and testosterone were almost non-existant. This is NOT HRT. HRT is made from horse urine and then manipulated to be broken down in the human body. Plant based hormones are much better for you and don't have the side effects of HRT. If you are male, don't think this is just a female problem. A males testosterone can drop to low levels, causing the same problems.
The adrenal glands not functioning properly can also mimic the signs of depression. Before you let them put you on something, make sure they rule out things not working properly first.
If you depression is situational, such as your job or a divorce, I have found Lexapro to be very helpful. It doesn't seem to have as many side effects as some of the other SSRI's. Ask your doctor for a "weight neutral" SSRI. Zoloft and some of the others can cause serious weight gain. Wellbutrin is a good choice if you are overweight, unless you have anxiety. It can increase anxiety and the frequency of migraine type headaches.
To find a doctor who will work with more natural therapies, first find a pharmacy near you that does "prescription compounding". Then ask them if they can recommend a good doctor for you.

First, you will have to see a psychiatrist for prescription meds. Psychologist can't write orders for prescriptions. St. John's Wort is an herbal antidepressant. I think it would be better to see a psychiatrist and be monitored. Depression is a chemical imbalance and should be treated as a medical condition just like diabetes or heart disease is. Caffeine is actually a mild antidepressant too. Your family doctor can start you on some basic antidepressants. The "starter" meds are usually something like zoloft or prozac. If those don't work they might use lexapro which is very effective for most people. But your doctor is the one who needs to tell you what you should be on.

There are so many different kinds these days, it's hard to say what's best. Not much over-the-counter though.
Zoloft and Prozac are two very good ones. Go by your doctor's guidance.
