A country is whatever area of land & water where the people claim to be a counry, and other countries agree. There are about 243 countries in the world, depending on who you ask.

For example, you can get into an argument about if the Republic of China (commonly referred to as Taiwan) is a country, or part of the People's Republic of China (mainland China).
