I work for a company that usually pays a good bonus and as such the salary is very low to compensate. The hours are very long and everyone always goes the extra mile, but this year they are not paying any bonus, so for some people their basic is not enough to survive...is this fair or do we just need to suck it up!

Not fair, but perfectly legal, unless you have an employment contract that states that if you don't make a certain salary amount, management is obligated to compensate you for the difference (kind of like what restaurants do with their waitstaffs' tip income).

You never need to "suck it up". Perhaps the best tactic at this point is to talk to management. Tell them the same thing that you told us: everyone has worked long and hard this year, and no one understands why they aren't being compensated as they were in past years. Only this way will you find out what's on management's "mind". Also, this might be a good way to find out if the company is in financial trouble, and give you a chance to bail before things get any worse.

Good luck!

Why was there no bonus?
If management is greedy, then there is a process called collective bargaining.
If, despite all your hard work, there are no profits, then there are no bonuses.

did the company make money? if so, have a strike and demand more money, group power. if not, what is preventing it from happening again? is it something you don't know? time to look for another job?
