Books are the best friends of man. That’s how the saying goes, but when the same book becomes a burden then it is not the same good friend. Whether it is quality or the weight of the books unless they are tolerable they will cause only aversion. “Chicken is very delicious but that doesn’t mean that a vegetarian also should eat I”. In fact physical exercise does help in increasing the efficiency of the brain but the burden of school bag cannot be classified in that segment.
The best thing to do is muse of once own schooldays and think how you felt the pain of carrying a load of books and felt sorry for not carrying a particular book. Not because you forgot but because that would have been too heavy for you to handle. All children are not strong enough to carry the load as all of them are not physically as well built as the other. Especially let’s consider the little angels-the girls carrying a burden of books the sight of which would hurt any man.
When we think of solutions tothis problem we do find ample solutions .but its always the school and the PTA to decide which way they should go. One option I find is to bifurcate the whole year’s courseware into portions of different subject for a week and similarly for the whole year. This can reduce the weight at one shot and at the same time make schooling handier for the student. Notebooks too can take similar approach. so the whole material in a bag will come down to a study book and a notebook. With the other accessories .this may sound novel but it will surely bring good results. Term exams can be planned well in advance with the required courseware and students need not carry unnecessary weight.
The second option that I think will be better is of using computer instead of books. Thereby the total load of books can be ward off. The books can come in the form of CDs and schools can prepare classes already equipped with computers wherein the student just needs to sit and browse through. This will of course have a damage on the handwriting but we can take care of that by just using notebooks for all the homework and other notes for the class.. this approach will be costly as all the families need to have a computer in their house as well as the school. Hence this can be done using some rebate scheme wherein all the families can get PCs on installment.
Either of these plans if implemented will surely allow the students to move with more confidence .imagining such a schooling itself is a bliss as you will be full of energy throughout the day with no burdens on your shoulder. And the burden of school bags will be a faint memory of the past.

Why do children have to carry all their text books to school? All they should need is their subject notebooks for the day.
Some possible solutions -
1. A copy of all text books could be made available at school.
2. Lockers can be provided for students.
3. The third and most difficult option is for teachers to find a way to teach their subject material without the use of a text book. Possible active and interactive methods of learning can be explored. The text book should be a place for students to get more detailed info about what they learned in the class. The basic learning experience in a classroom should be different from just textbook reading.

There are some schools for the lower classes that they can keep the books in their schools and go back to school and start using it as long as they are in the school for studying.
This type of approach in many schools are not present. If such system is maintained by all schools the burden of carrying books can be eliminated

When I was in high school, I never met one kid that really complained about it. It always seemed like it was the overprotective moms that constantly complained about every little thing that johnny had to do. Kids have been carrying huge books for almost a century now. And by looking at the size of some of these kids these days, those overprotective moms might want to lay off this because now little johnny might die from heart problems much sooner than having a so called "bad" back from school books.

the school that i went to has recently started a system where each classroom has a set of books that stays in the class, and each student takes a book to keep at home, that way they don't have to carry all their books around, just their folders. the school doesn't even have lockers anymore because of this.

Computer is coming in big way in everyone's life. A day is not far off when every student will be provided with a computer before him in the class and he / she will have all the books and notes there to do the work and study.

It is very simple.
Learn while you play and play while you learn
is the best way to teach and learn. Hence at that time the lessons are also taught and the children need not carry any bag or burden ofbooks on their backs

We all used to have the same amount of books, we just had LOCKERS to put them in. Lockers are seen as a "secret" place to hide weapons and drugs. Since the day lockers were removed from our schools, our kids have been overburdened with books weighing dozens of pounds. The only thing this accomplishes is to mess up the kids posture.
I'm just glad my kids are almost out of school. I cannot imagine putting up with all the homework and hassles they put up with...

Well, children need their books. That's why they have those rolling school bags now. But ofcourse i think that they can lessen that load by only taking the books and materials they need for that day's homework.
