I'm not really an expert on sensory mechanisms, but I think there's nothing para- or abnormal about this phenomenon. Whatever you see is the result of your photoreceptors signalling wildly, but photoreceptors are sometimes unreliable little beasts and fire even when there's nothing to be seen. (In particular they love to fire when I'm low on oxygen :D) There are probably very good explanations for these random signals, but unfortunately I don't really know them. At another stage of sensation, I'd guess that even your brain can generate false images without any signal from the eyes (well, that's what's going on when you are dreaming, I guess).
As for why you thought it was a cat, I'm pretty sure that it was a trick of your brain. I do know from personal experience that whatever you see, your brain tries to interpret it in a meaningful way. Some very well-known examples come from the surface of Mars, where people believed to see human faces or well-defined canals, when in fact there were only some irregular rock formations.
When you see things from the corner of your eye, it's even easier to misinterpret the sight. The edges (in fact, the majority) of your field of vision is dominated by a type of photoreceptors called rod cells. Unlike cone cells, which are responsible for sharp (and colour) vision and mostly packed in a small area on the retina, rods are "wired" in a way that produces quite blurry images (you probably know that you can only read the newspaper if you are looking directly at it). A really "creative" brain can make out almost anything of a blurry image in the corner of the eye.

it's not likely to be paranormal phenemenon, though i do believe in ghosts i doubt thats what you saw. everyone has had this happen and if they say they didn't they are liars. most of the time this happens it could be because you are tired and haven't slept good. Also there are things within the eyes (i forgot the name of them sorry) but they are the things that when you close your eyse and rub them the stars and circles that you see. alot of the time that is what you r seeing is the stars out of the corner of your eye. for all you disbelievers out there, there is scientific fact to back this up. Also sometimes you just have something in your eye. but the mind is a complex instrument and sometimes can be a primitive one. so if you see the stars out of the corner of your eye your mind cant complrehend what that was and you panic, so then the mind goes "oh it was just a cat or oh it was the outline of a person" and again scientific fact to back it up...so dont worry its probably not a paranormal phenomenon, it's just your mind trying to figure out what those stars were. and like i said before everyone has had this happen, it's just some don't try to believe that it is ghosts or something which doesnt mean that it is one which it probably isnt.

Last night I saw something move out of the corner of my eye two different times. It s happened a lot of times in the past, but nothing is there. I assume my 6th sense is more sensitive than some as I can hear or see a spider walking across the floor or carpet & that alone blows my mine. But last night on the 3rd time I saw movement in the kitchen, 2 rooms away in a well lit room. I glanced real fast and saw my deceased dog walking across the room. I did not see his head, but the rest of him. I felt a cold chill all over me & upon looking down at my arms, all my hairs were standing straight up & I had goose bumps. Of course I got up and looked and nothing was in the kitchen. I can t explain it, my dog has been gone for over 6 months & I was not thinking about him. I think some people are just more sensitive or can be reached from another level of life or something! Any ideas!

This happens to me when I don't get enough sleep. If I work the overnight shift at work a few days in a row, I usually start seeing stuff move out of the corner of my eye. It can be a little creepy when its 3am and there is nobody else working with you. By the way, I work at a hotel. One time there actually was a person standing behind me watching me while I was folding laundry in the middle of the night. It scared the crap out of me because that part of the hotel is off limits to guests and I usually go all night without ever seeing anyone. I turned around and there he was...just standing there looking at me. He wanted more towels or something. So my advise would be...get more quality sleep time!

It's possible. I lived in an apartment and I used to catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye. It was as though someone would peak their head around the corner from my bedroom to look at me really fast. It happened many times. I would go look to see if someone was in the other room but never found anyone.
There was a haunting show on t.v. a few years ago. It showed a video and I swear they caught a ghost cat walking across a hallway. I don't remember the name of the show but it was something like, "Ghosts caught on tape."
People who have not experienced these things don't believe in them. It's only a matter of time before science will prove these things exist.

My boyfriend, 3 kids, and I live in the basement of an old house. We have a shrine in one corner of the room. Every now and then I see shadows of a man flying above me and around the room. My kids say that there is a "Big bad wolf" out to get them. The kids are 3,2, and 1. My boyfriend claims to have seen things too. I belive in spirits a whole lot. Sometimes the light can cast shadows you think are real. There really isn't a real explanation to what is going on.

Eyes decieve the mind all the time. Even just looking another way can put an entire part of the room in a different light, and make it look like something is moving. Don't worry - it just means you're normal. Congratulations!

That happened to me once, I was sat in the armchair with the door leading into my front room to the side of me, and all of a sudden I saw something out the corner of my eye, and the hairs on my arms stood up and i turned a little and saw the outline of a person on a side profile but when i turned all the way there was no one there.
Luckly my bloke was there at the time but I was so frightened and burst into tears.

Everyone has. Sometimes we find out we did see something. When I was a kid, I saw something out of the corner of my eye when I was in the kitchen but thought it was just my imagination. It turned out a mouse has gotten into the house. We realized that after the dog went crazy chasing it

I have seen things move out of the corner of my eye. I can be in bed staring at the ceiling and I see something like a human crawling on the ground, but when I look, there's nothing there. I always think It's an alien, but ???. It really freaks me out.
