A brahman is supposed to be invoking the blessing of God, for the welfare of whole humanity. With a view to protecting him from the cares of day to day living, it was expected of others to provide for his living and for him to do his tapas and go begging for his living. He was not supposed to eke out for his living.

Not exactly. See below:
"A Brahmin is a person who knows Brahm or Brahman, the ultimate reality or God or supreme knowledge; hence Brahmin means, "knower of God". However, the historical situation in Hindu society is that Brahmins are the traditional priests and pundits (scholars). Today however, many Brahmins are employed in a variety of occupations and their religious traditions and culture are becoming less of a factor in daily life. Brahmins, forming a small percentage of Indian population, have contributed to culture, knowledge and industry immensely.
The six duties of a Brahmin are given as per the Sloka
"Adhyaapanam Adhyayanam
Yajanam Yaajanam Tathaa
Daanam Pratigraham Chaiva
Brahmanaanaamakalpayaat"
Teaching, learning, performing Yaaga, make performing Yaga, accept Daana, and give Daana are the six duties of a Brahmin."

Brahmins are basically educators who seem to know hindu theology well. Also hinduism has lots of rituals and the brahmin keeps himself educated on the same, over time and over generations. They are also one of the guardins of the hindu faith. in olden times the brahmin as an instructor and upholder of the faith is compensated with food for his knowledge and upkeep of temple worship. Brahmin these days takes cash for his services instead of say land [given by raja's etc] or crop for services rendered in the name of ritual or religion. Now a days with changing times brahmins are in all facets of living and not just worship and learning.

For obvious reasons they flew in the directions of strong winds. The strong winds left not even sufficient clothes and one had to keep satiated with whatever one had. The lighter objects like dry leaves and worthless dust often leads the strong winds as these canot withstand the pressure. Survived even in crisis laiden sinister circumtances while others in affinity proceeded to pataal-loka.

They were called bhikshu's and not brahmins.
brahmins were the ones who possessed good knowledge and it was dharm (duty) of the rich to donate something to them so taht they can enhance their knowledge and impart it to the society (Like the universities today ask for donations). however brahmins were the ones who asked for alms. bhikshu's asked for alms as they were financially not in a very good position and it was dharm (duty) of very family to donate him a fistful of grains.

it is not right to say like that, like other human being "brahmin" is also a human beign but due to its position in hindu society they possess a great value in our society and all of us give them preferece because in hindu there are so may traditions & we all know about our tradition just because of brahmins because they have a good knowledge of our purans and vedas that why they are called "guru" they give us knowledge of our traditions.
