Go to Home Depot or another builders supply store and purchase an insert door. They come in various sizes. I recently placed one in my fireplace. It is made of brass and has two glass doors. Cost about $240.00 depending on size. Easy installation. Also, make sure your flue is closed. The installation corrected the problem you are having.

Put in a natural gas fireplace which would seal off your old fireplace and cut your heating bill plus the maintenance costs of your old fireplace and chimney.

If you don't want to get rid of the old fireplace charm, there are other ways to install a fire box with wall vents to improve the efficiency of the wood burning fireplace and keep out the cold air.

I was brought up in an old house that had 6 fireplaces in it, it was a 300 yr old colonial. My dad would stuff a burlap bag with hay and then jam it up the flue, it's easy and inexpensive and when you want to use it pull it out. Have you tried just shutting the damper? good luck

If you haven't done so already...get "in there" and close the flue.
