Owning a small business takes a high level of commitment. The self-employed generally work much longer hours than their friends who "work for the man". You also need to be the bookkeeper/lawyer/personnel director/sales manager/inventory controller/cleaning crew, etc. Also, a business plan of some sort would be helpful: what are your goals for this business, and how do you plan to achieve them?

I've been doing accounting work for small businesses for about 20 years (gee, time flies when you're having fun). Anyway, what I've seen over the years is that the businesses that fail generally have no control over their paperwork-they have trouble getting payroll done on time, they can't get the sales tax filed on time, they're late making loan payments, they can't get their accounting records together to prepare a financial statement and they don't have a grasp of the legal paperwork that needs to be completed (business licenses, proper insurance coverage, reviewed lease agreements).

Basically, being self-employed is an administrative nightmare if you're not dedicated to keeping up with the portion of the business that isn't generating revenue. Most owners spend all of their time focusing on sales, which is certainly good, but if you can't keep track of the numbers, you're destined for almost certain failure.

First figure out what kind of business you want to open and then figure out if the market needs what you propose to open.
