well, often times people hang out with those who share common interests. a great example of this is in the high school cafeteria. it seems like everyone sits the same place every day, and the african americans do tend to always sit at the same table (i can understand that, my school has a lot of white people). People sit with the same groups since that is where they feel the most comfortable sitting, because it is what they get used to. so for me, the beginning of the year was definately the easiest time to switch things up, but to do this you must take the effort to meet new people. Now I have a wider variety of good friends and usually I can build on that by becoming friends with their friends.
There are also scientific reasons for why people of the same race tend to hang out, having to do with the brain. In order to get around this, one must not think of people as much in terms of labels and think of them as actual people and their individuality.
This is simply my opinion, but I think that people sometimes fear change because they are afraid of something not turning out for the better or going wrong, and non-African Americans dont always like being the only one in a group of blacks. They might almost feel out of place because they often do different things that are simple, such as watch different TV shows and play different sports. So I would make an effort to get everyone together, but split up the groups somehow every once in a while, and just become friends. Be interested in others and enjoy yourself, its not really as hard as it first seems. You just have to break the barrier, then everything becomes easier. Volunteer to help someone you normally would not hang out with if they need help, simple things are nice. Good luck!!!!!
ps: also showing people that you are comfortable in your own skin and go out of your way to be kind to everyone gives others a reason to do so as well.
i agree with jcboyle. "be the change you want to see"-easier said than done i know

I feel that it is important for all uf us to be open and out about our sexuallity. Then people can have a first hand account of an actual Lesbian of gay person, not just a preconceived notion from a TV stereotype. Respect is the key.

Would Coed Naked Posting be wrong? LOL, but seriously, forming a Gay Straight Alliance group could help.
