I bought an '03 Chevy Malibu 12months ago. 6 months in the water pump had to be replaced. Now, the Fuel Pump needs replaced. AND the "air intake gasket". One day I stopped to get gas and the car wouldn't fire. The theft deterrent light came on and so we thought something had set it off. Needless to say we had it towed and the dealer says the above need replaced. To the tune of $1500.00. If I wasn't upside down $4,000. I would have just bought another car. But the only choice is repair. What things should I be aware of during this repair and what other things should I ask to be checked or replaced while they are doing this. I could use some serious grease monkey advice here. They see a girl like me coming from a mile away.

I just answered a similar question in Pontiac that you may want to look at.If the 8th digit of the VIN is an "E",this engine has many issues.I believe this is what you are refering to as the "air intake gasket"as there is no such thing. This would be the lower intake manifold gasket set which is a common problem with this engine which is used in numerous GM vehicles. The issue with the ignition is what they call the "pass lock sensor"which the ignition key cylinder fits into.this vehicle will "chew up"brake rotors.Do not use GM rotors!Choose aftermarket rotors and "Ceramic" brake pads for longer life(and less $)plus much less brake dust on your front rims.Ask your GM dealer for a "VIS" report, this will give you the dealer(s)service history and performed/unperformed recalls on your vehicle...it is free of charge.Be pro-active and forceful.the last thing a dealer wants is a bad CSI(customer service index)rating from you when GM sends out a survey card to you in the mail after your service is completed. Most dealers will buckle under tough situations like this because of CSI,and they do not want you to call the 800 number for customer service that is in the back of your owner's manual.

I work for a Chevy dealer service dept. If the Theft light came on, then it is probably the ignition switch, (car has an anti-start theft system). But it seems that $1500 to repair it id way too much. Are you going to a Chevy dealer or some Joe Shmoe mechanic?

i own a repair shop, and on this one the best advice i can probably give you is have it scanned by a dealer or a real good repair shop, anyone who can read a scanner good should be able to help you on this one i wouldn't think it could need all of this and still be running, have it checked at a dealer ,and see you may need a few things ,but you wont know until it has been scanned, and checked real good, two or three opinions are better than one any day, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

Best thing to do is take the car to the Chevy dealer for a oil change and ask for a no cost diagnosis of problems with a written estimate. (they will do this at n/c for their customers)
