Perhaps a second meeting with the person and someone who's opinion you trust, is a good idea. Ask for a reference, whom you could contact. Conduct an Internet search for the person to see if that reveals anything. It is also possible to search your state/city correctional facilities and see if the person has ever been incarcerated. (For example, in New York State, you would search "New York State inmate locator") Knowing the person's approximate date of birth is helpful, but not necessary.
You can also check www.nsopr.gov for a listing of sex offenders (national).
Lastly, ALWAYS follow your intuition.

you dont know..secret "axe murderes" are always really good actors..they can be sweet and to good to be true..then they can act totally different..so i would pick a guy who makes alot of mistakes..instead of the "to good to be true" type :)
