I recently contacted 'www.stopurban4x4s.org.uk' which is a site against urban 4X4s (Surprise surprise!!) and asked them why they only campaigned against 4X4s and not other eco-unfriendly vehicles, and was told "All 4X4s are tarred with the same brush". Is this right? I'm not saying it isn't sensible to restrict the use of large private vehicles in cities, but why only if they have 4 wheel drive, not if they are heavy on fuel or pump out large quantities of pollutants? OK to drive a gas guzzling racing car like a Ferrari, but not a little Suzuki Jimney? Very strange. Ca some one expain this logic?

Wrong. One of the most popular 4X4s in this area is the Discovery. Fuel consumption between 25 - 35 mpg. No worse than a vast majority of medium to large 2X4s and a darn sight better than some.

Thanks for the laugh Dottydog! They are MEANT to kill things? Wow, no one told me that! Seriously, you've shown my point. The bumber of a Suberu Imprezza is very low, as is that on the Audi TT, but they will 'be tarred with the same brush', as you have done. Again, no knowledge of the subject.

Sorry Sweet Sarah, but I can assure you that my old '97 Disco 300 does a minimum of 23 on short journies, 33 on a run, on average 25-26mpg. It does drop to 20 - 22 towing the horse in its trailer.

NO LAND ROVER DISCOVERY GETS CLOSE TO 25 MPG. COMPARING EXOTIC CARS WHICH ONLY NUMBER PROBABLY AROUND 50000 TOTAL UNITS VERSUS FORD SALES 10 TIMES THAT IN PICK- UPS. ITS A APPLES TO ORANGE COMPARISON. I HAVE A 2003 TOYOTA FOUR DOOR 4X4 MAYBE 20 MPG. ANY VEHICLE MANUFACTURED IN THE LAST DECADE IS FAR CLEANER THAN CARS 25 YEARS AGO. WE ALL LOVE THE 50S AND 60S MUSCLE CARS ETC -- VERY BIG POLLUTERS NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING.

I'm not for or against 4x4's but i think dottydog has a point, I saw a programme about children getting hit with cars and the injuries they got had a lot to do with the shape and size of the vehicles they were hit with. It's the front of vehicles too high like a 4x4 and when it hits a kid it knocks the kid to the road where the 4x4 could run over them. It's along those lines, it was a while ago that i seen the programme.

You are right it is stupid. This is America and if it isn't illegal than we can drive what ever kind of cars we want. America is one of the most conscientious countries regarding pollution in the world. Other countries are way bigger polluters. If people want to make a difference, what we should do is tell other countries that we give aid to, that they can not have our aid, unless they clean up their acts. maybe have them work on one big thing a year, and if they refuse, than refuse aid. We shouldn't have to be the only country working on decreasing pollution, especially with all the money we give everyone else. Or with China we should tell them that we will not except their imports unless they clean up they are one of the biggest causes of pollution in the world.

Of course there are some relatively innocent 4 X 4s, but on the whole they are gas guzzling polluters.

Not the only ones but a good place to start.

its the height of the bumper they are to high for city driving and are likely to kill a child if they are hit as they are meant to kil animals and protect the vehicle not the other way they are also very strong and would crush other cars not to mention clean 4x4 look wrong they should be dirty and muddy

Your right there is no logic. I suspect, if truth be known, that this has nothing to do with environmental concerns and everything to do with congestion. Its a fact that people drive and park these vehicles in inappropriate areas (school pick up’s are usually highlighted), resulting in heavy and often dangerous congestion.
