Does anyone else find this appalling?

This question was sparked by another - someone asked how many U.S. Presidents have been impeached. The MAJORITY of those who answered the question, answered it wrong.

What does this say about America?

To monreda: Do I know the question? Yes, honey, I do. I asked it.

Ever heard "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it"?

Yeah.

It is very appalling and sadly true. When the 7 minute DVD titled "Everthing You Need to Know About Your Government" get's released we (the general American public) might have a chance to understand how things work. Until then we can only hope that more people take an interest in READING (although I doubt it).

Part of the problem regarding your impeachment question is the confusion over the meaning of the word, "impeachment". Impeachment, contrary to many people's understanding, means the "accusation" of a high official, it requires a majority vote of the House. Impeachment does not mean the same thing as removal from office. Removal from office would require a trial and conviction by a two thirds majority of the Senate, presided over by the Supreme Court Justice.

While no president has ever been removed from office, two have been "impeached", both Southern Democrats.
Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.

I'd say becuase most Americans don't work in politics. Sparking no interest. But I would say that's more of a history question. And what's so appalling about it. Why should anyone remember how many presidents have been impeached.

Oh and I'm sure all brits are just genius...puhleesse!

How many got impeached is trivia not civics. The impeachment process itself is Civics. Not that anybody understands it anyway. Now if you are asking how many presidents have been removed from office by the impeachment process, the answer is none, though Nixon was certainly heading for being the first. Impeached as I recall was two (Nixon resigned first rather than face it). Neither was removed.

It is also amazing how few people can google.

I don't know, I learned about our government structure in grade school and learned about politics in high school. I do find it appalling that these people have a high school diploma and a college degree. What all this says is that Americans are looking out for number 1, meeeeeeeeee. Without looking it up, I couldn't be sure of my answer for how many US Prs have been impeached. I was alive for 2 of them. One was punished by being thrown out of his office, the other got a slap on the wrist and continued as Prs. I would have to look up to see if there were any others, I think there was at least one more.

I'm only 18 years of age, and I find that this is true, and that the answers to your questions are fairly disconcerting. Americans are raised in such a way that their intellectual capacity doesn't include the ambitions of learning that which matters most in their lives, even though they fail to realize that it will affect them everyday - that is, philosophy (teaches you how to think objectively in order to understand people and opinions), geography, and political philosophy. What this SAYS about America is this, which I like to relate to a sine curve: you see (i'm not a religious man, but let's put that aside for the time being), even in the Bible, it says that every nation is headed toward its end...I fully believe that, as EVERYTHING in the universe works as a sine curve having its ups and downs. In the 1950s, America was at the top of the sine curve, and since then, it has been on the decline as Europe has been on the Incline, currently, peaking, and China/Russia are just getting started on the incline...it says that we SUCK as a society today.

will knowing how many presidents was impeached get you a job or will they keep hiring the illegals for low pay? i don't think getting on this sight trying to make others look bad to make ones self feel good about their life when they are just as ignorant. bad taste to put other people down.

DO YOU KNOW THE QUESTION? if so then good for you.

Your question has me wondering how much you know. Impeachment has two phases, so by not referring to which you are battering about only clouds understanding, and does not add to meanful knowledge.
Most Americans have general understanding of how government works except for the President. he still has delusion he was elected to run another S&L piggybank.

Too many people are so caught up in their partys "beliefs" that they ignore facts and truth to defend their party. I have been out of school for a long time and one must wonder what are they teaching in today's civic/government/history classes.

That the majority of Americans either don't care/have no interest in the government or it's history. Sad, but true!
