You would have to fit a replacement compressor, has to be brazed into the pipework and then re-gassed, will cost lots!!

What do you mean?Does it have a leak or is it going out?
Does the compressor work at all?It may not even be the compressor at all.

Fridge compressors are sealed units, and can't be repaired.

It would cost you more to fix that fridge then it would be to buy a new one, and thats if they even have parts to repair it if it's possible. Buy a new one, that thing is ancient.

g after over 50 years i would think that all the spares have been dedicated to a museum sugest get a new one

I'm pretty sure it's not a freon system. No matter what value it is to you, it's not gonna happen. It could be converted for about $1,500

you must be an American. here in the U.K. we get free disposal of old refrigerators because of the CFC content.

save the planet and buy a new one:-)
