This is a really good question. It is usually qualified with either hardware or software i.e what hardware platform are you running, and what software platform did you implement on the new hardware?

In troubleshooting, such as attempting to help a friend with a problem, knowing the platform - hardware/software - is essential to resolving the problem.

to name a few

If you are talking about computer architecture, it could be the hardware that the OS is running on.
