I live in the NY Tri-State area and I want to look into adopting a puppy for my son.... does anyone know where there are any adoption places around here? Do the adoption places give all the animals their shots before you take them home? Oh and do they even have puppies or just grown dogs at shelter?

Check out Petfinder.com online. You put in your zip code and the type of dog you are looking for and all the rescues and shelters come up. There are hundreds of dogs and puppies. I live in the NY tristate area too. I just went to petfinder and put in my zip code and on the first page alone, there were baby dachshunds, poodles and so much more. All the dogs come vaccinated and some even spayed. If you have never had a dog, I really suggest getting a book on care and training first. Training a dog takes alot of effort.

I'm not sure about your area, but try the phone book or call animal control for a list of local shelters. Your animal control may vaccinate, but usually not.

If you look for a rescue or no-kill shelter they will usually vaccinate the animals and may include spay or neuter. Usually that is a great deal financially. Bear in mind that if you get a puppy usually it will have had only one or two shots of the series of four. You be responsible for picking up the rest at three week intervals.

One caution though. This is not puppy and kitten season right now. If you can hold off for a few months, your local shelters will be overrun with puppies starting in late March and April and continuing throughout summer. So if you don't find a pup you like right now, be patient and you'll find the right one once puppy season comes around. Don't settle. Wait for what you want.

Sometimes we don't have puppies but they certainly do need rescued. All the simpletons that breed their mutt find that once the pups start pissing and sh*tting everywhere they don't want to deal with finding them homes and dump them. I have a momma dog now that was found by animal control running the streets and all her babies will be up for adoption in a few weeks. They will have shots, deworming spayed/neutered and microchipped.

Do think twice before getting a puppy. They are messy little creatures and cause the most stink and damage. Make sure YOU are willing to be the caretaker not your son.

Most puppies in shelters are taken by rescues that can care for them a little better.

Shelters do have puppies sometimes..you could check there. If you buy from a pet store, they should have all their puppy shots and usually if you buy from a breeder they will have shots but ask first!
